Is this a Jackal Buzzard? Pics were taken in the Pitseng Pass while on our way to Rhodes in the Eastern Cape.

These pics were taken on a gravel road while travelling from Clocolan to Winburg. The birds were very skittish and I only got these two pics.

Yes this an Orange River Francolin. That all white throat (as opposed to a smaller white throat rufous-margined) and the black moustachial stripe extending down and around as a complete necklace separate this from the Red-winged. The Grey-winged would be a much browner looking bird with little or no white. In appearance the Orange River is closest to the Shelley's of north-east SA, but their ranges only overlap in eastern North-West, not this far south in the Free State.

Your raptor appears to be the rare pale form of the Jackal Buzzard, in which the chest is pale/white rather than the characteristic rufous. Judging by the pale markings on the wings and the lack of any dark colouration on the belly this bird could be a sub-adult. I'd welcome other comments as this is certainly not the overall plumage of a "standard" Jackal Buzzard.

Yeay! Another lifer for me!! Thanks! :D

And yes, the raptor had me really confused and very excited for a while until I realised that it probably could only be a Jackal Buzzard. <!-- s:? --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_confused.gif" alt=":?" title="Confused" /><!-- s:? -->

It's not often that I see raptors hanging out on the ground, wonderful sighting!
