Hi!

I have been living permanently in the old Transkei region on the Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape for the past 5 years. Since first coming here, there has been one bird that has always reminded me of the area, it doesn't call during the morning or evening when all the other birds are going crazy, it is always by itself, during the afternoon with this lovely sound - mp3 format recording attached (the actual bird call starts after 12 secs into the recording). Could anyone help me identify it please??? I would love to know which bird it is! thanks!

Hi RejaneWoodroffe,

Welcome to the forum!

I reckon that's a Black-crowned Tchagra.

Cheers,
Gordon

Hi Gordon and Doug

I never realised that you had replied to my message, I think the original notification went to my spam folder! I was just thinking recently that I never did find out what that bird sound was and logged into the forum again. Then I saw your message. Thanks so much, you may have turned me into a bird-watcher :)

cheers
Rejane

I have an avid bird-watcher friend staying over at the moment and he seems to be enjoying the forests around my house a lot more than I ever did! So you may be right, I'll sneak a look at his books later :)

You'll find as you get more into birding you'll grow an awareness of what's going on around you that you never had before. Sounds that your brain tuned out now become relevant or a movement in the bushes. Learning which sounds are alarm calls from common species that alert you to something else nearby!

All great fun! :)

I've heard of the Sasol bird app for learning bird sounds, would you recommend it?

Yes, I've got the SASOL app and the Newmans one too, both are very good.
