Hi,

Got a bad shot of this guy in the Kruger Park near Afsaal. There were two. I pressume it's African Hawk Eagle and not Ayre's?

I imagine it would be quite a coup to chalk up an Ayres' in this area. I do not know how big the territory of a pair of African Hawk-Eagles would be, but over the 2007-2013 period I had quite a lot of sightings of one or a pair of AH-E along the Biyamiti Loop and the road running south-east from Afsaal to the main N-S gravel road south of the Biyamiti Weir - so all within probably 10km of your sighting.

I agree with Neil. The probability is very much in favour of African Hawk Eagle. Probably the best way to separate them is in flight, as Ayres Hawk eagle has braoder shorter wings, more like an accipiter than an eagle.
