Hi All,

I have registered here to ask you guys about the bird in the photos I will be trying to attach just now. At first we took it for a halfcollared, but upon closer examination it does look more like the European. The pictures were taken at Marievale outside of Johannesburg on the 24th of January.

In my view the back and the collar doesn't match the Sasol guide drawings of the Half-collared. This may be down to plumage variations, but then the bird does match all the European images I can find quite well.

Well-argued opinions very welcome, and thanks in advance,

Mads S, visiting from Denmark

Hi Mads S,

Welcome to the forum!

That is a juvenile Malachite Kingfisher. The adults have the bright red bill while the youngsters have a black bill.

Cheers,
Gordon
