Dear Forum readers

Found this raptor north-east of the University of Limpopo in an old cultivated field. Although first though was that of a pale morph of Wahlberg’s we concluded a pale buzzard of sorts.
European Honey, maybe, they are very variable, tail pattern match?
Steppe buzzard, probably the default choice but the light underwing coverts does not match.
Long-legged buzzard, tail not rufous.
Would appreciate any contribution to this ID.

Thanks in advance.
Arrie

Thanks Doug

Given that it was only my second encounter with this species (the first was early that same day, with a dark morph in a pine plantation) it is understandable that I struggled with the ID. But then got to the correct conclusion when I wrote the initial massage.

Good call on your initial instinct. That heavy broad barring on the flight feathers would eliminate all the eagles (bar maybe some of the hawk eagles "
