John Young created the topic: Marsh harrier
I popped into the Darvill Bird Sanctuary in Pietermaritzburg on Friday after a few meetings in town. I saw this Marsh Harrier and managed to fire off a few shots of which only two came out showing any reasonable features for an ID - certainly loaded here to demonstrate photographic prowess!!!.

My first impression was an African Marsh Harrier but just want to check with the forum if Western could be a possibility?

I would say it's a juvenile African Marsh Harrier.

The juvenile african marsh harrier is very similar to the western marsh harrier. From the photo the pale breast band and slightly more white head definitely suggests a juvenile african marsh (which distinguish the two). Western marsh also a non breeding summer visitor.
