Howard Gie created the topic: African Mourning Dove
Hi - This is my first attempt - hope I'm doing it correctly

In September 2005 I visited Namushasha Lodge on the Kwando River near Kongola in the Caprivi Strip (Namibia). At their bird feeder I saw a large dark (chocolate brown) dove with a black neck ring. It had yellow eyes and appeared to be a very dark African Mourning Dove. Could this have been a melanistic form?

Kind regards

Yes Howard.

This section is aimed at just such needs. You saw something strange and you want input on it, this is the place to go.

On the bird itself, sounds to me like a Mourning Dove. I can't think of anything else that would match what you saw. I wold say that other than the fact that the bird was quite a bit darker than normal, the yellow eye would generally be the clincher. I would only expect one of the other doves to have a lightly coloured eye if there was some form of Leucism, but then the bird would be lighter than normal.

Mourning dove sounds spot on.

Heck.... call it the dark phase subspecies (only kidding) <!-- s8) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cool.gif" alt="8)" title="Cool" /><!-- s8) -->
